Maternity: Amanda + Travis

Amanda and Travis are expecting their first baby. They invited me along to document this new and exciting chapter in their lives, and you could tell that they both can’t wait to meet their little peanut in just a few short weeks. I feel so honoured to be able to meet up with them again and photograph them with their newest little family member soon. I can hardly wait! Have I mentioned just how much I love cuddling babies?

Thankfully the rain stopped right before their session so we could do some photographs outside, but we also did a few inside and I love the way they turned out. Amanda, let me just say that pregnancy looks fabulous on you! Many thanks to both of you for inviting me to hang out and document your growing family! You two are going to be amazing parents!

Amanda’s little kitty loved the camera as well…

A Staycation Well Spent

My staycation is coming to an end. Only two full days left and then it’s back to work, and back to reality. How did 17 days go by that quickly?? I could use another 17 off! Haha….oh wishful thinking.

It has been an amazing 2.5 weeks off from work. I feel so rested. I feel relaxed. I feel rejuvenated. All of those feelings that you are supposed to get from having that much time off. It’s been a staycation well spent. I made full use of almost every day and had so many fun things planned. I spent time at my in-laws place on Mayne Island, time at my parents cabin on Harrison Lake, and did many day trips. I got to cross a few things off of my list too. I went biking around Stanley Park and the Sea Wall with my lovely friend and her cute little daughter. Oh was it ever fun! We had the perfect weather for it too. We spent the afternoon just cruising on our bikes, with the beautiful ocean surrounding us, and the ocean air breezing through our hair. And the day wouldn’t have been complete without a cupcake. A reward for all of our hard work. Obviously.

Another item I got to cross off my list was going on a day trip by myself. I went to a lake for a whole day. Just me, my book, my journal, my iPhone and my bikini. That was something I’ve never done before, spent a whole day somewhere by myself. I must say, it was definitely something different. But it was very relaxing. I did miss having some company during some parts of the day, but I’m proud of myself for doing it. And just laying out in the sun all day was glorious.

My beautiful Mumsy also took me to Vancouver for a day of shopping and we spent the night at a nice hotel. It was so much fun! My Mom and I are very close and I love the relationship that we have, she’s like my closest girlfriend. So we always have a great time when we are together. Shopping was a success, H&M never disappoints. For dinner we went to this great place called Brix in Yaletown. Amazing! It has this cute courtyard in the middle of the city. You actually feel like you are in Europe. And the food…to die for. There are so many great restaurants in Vancouver, it was neat to try out a different one. I will definitely be going there again.

I also got to start and finish three books. Now that’s been a real treat. It’s been such a joy to have the time to read. I hope I can manage to keep it up during this busy Fall season ahead!

So all in all, it’s been a fantastic time off. I’ve loved every minute of it! September and October are going to be busy and lots of fun. My Grandparents are coming for a visit in September and my Mom, my Grandma and I will hopefully get to make pies and stock the freezer (another item on my list!). And then in October, my sweet, sweet friend is getting married! It’s going to be a beautiful celebration. After the wedding, we’ll head up to Whistler for Thanksgiving with my family, a tradition that we’ve kept up for 15 years. Always a trip to look forward to. Then, a week later, my beautiful cousin in Winnipeg gets married. So I’m very much looking forward to Fall.

Here are a few more photos from my staycation which were taken with my iPhone.

Cheers to staycations! And cheers to the coming of Fall and all that Fall brings :)

Things I’m Loving Lately

There have been so many things that I’ve been loving lately, I thought that I’d share with you all because they are so awesome! A few days ago (6 days to be exact), I started my 17 day stay-cation. For those of you who don’t know, a stay-cation is a vacation at home. Now don’t get me wrong here, I’m not staying cooped up in my house during the best weather we’ve had all summer. I’ve already been to Mayne Island last weekend with my wonderful husband and his family. Monday was rainy, so I had a “catch up” day. Tuesday I spent the day reading my new book on Jericho Beach with my sister, finishing the day off at Las Margaritas. It was lovely. And yesterday we spent the afternoon at the lake. Today will be another lake day. I’m planning on making full use of every day so that I can say that my stay-cation was lived to the fullest.

Some of you may ask, why a stay-cation? Why aren’t you going somewhere?? Well that was the original plan. You see, this time right now Dave and I were supposed to be travelling Europe. But things happen, and plans change, and the timing just wasn’t right. You can read more about that here. So bring on 2.5 weeks off! I’ve decided that I’m going to become B.C.’s biggest tourist.

So this brings me to my list of things I’m loving lately:

1. Stay-cations: Getting to explore, see, and do things in my area that I don’t normally get to do.

2. Reading: I little while back, my friends and I decided to start up a book club. And it’s been so great! I’m so thankful to have gotten back in to reading and have been able to get into some really good books lately! And now that I have some time off, I plan on reading A LOT. I actually just made a trip to Chapters the other day and did some damage. For those of you who love a good book and haven’t read these yet, here is your list. The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morten, The Help by Kathryn Stockett. And I’m just in the middle of The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. There are many more on my list and I can’t wait to get my hands on them.

3. Pinterest: OK. Pinterest is more of a love/hate kind of thing. I absolutely love love love it. You can pin all of the things that inspire you, pretty photos, design/decor ideas, literally anything you can find a photo of on the internet. It’s such a fabulous creation. I can have all of the things that I love and the things that inspire me in one place. Genious. But I hate it in the sense that I spend way too much time on it. I could literally spend hours pinning things. It’s bad. But so good. (If any of you want to join, just give me a shout and I can email you an invite!)

4. ShopRuche: Check it out, but don’t say I didn’t warn you. AMAZING clothes that are inexpensive. It’s dangerous.

So these are just a few things I’ve been loving lately. What are you loving? Hope you are enjoying your summer!

Creative Shoot: A Daydream At Sea

It all began with a picture. One picture, and the idea was born. I had been wanting to do a creative shoot with my sister for months, but for some reason, was having a hard time coming up with an idea. But as soon as that idea popped into our heads, we made it come to life. The concept, a daydream at sea. Many hours and sleepless nights were spent dreaming of what the shoot was going to be. We were so giddy putting a list together and finding photos that sparked our creativity. We wanted it to be soft, romantic, and glamorous. A daydream at sea.

My sister Stephanie has an amazing eye for style. She put together outfit options until we nailed it down to just the right ones. She decided on how her hair and makeup should be. She was amazing. It was so fun being able to work with my friend Scarlett, who did the makeup. It was exactly what we had envisioned, and Steph looked gorgeous! Scarlett did such an amazing job and I can’t wait to work with her again in the future!

We gathered the props from friends and family, with the odd thing being purchased. Details like seashells, the fishing net, and the candles, where things that were necessary to include. And the location? Jericho Beach. It was perfect! The light at sunset was breathtaking and just what I had hoped for.

There are so many photos, I’m seriously in love with every single one and it was incredibly hard to narrow it down, but here are my favourites.

We had so much fun creating our daydream at sea…

Stephanie, thank you for being so amazing! Thank you for all of your hard work in helping me put this idea of ours together. And thank you for being such a gorgeous model!

Scarlett, thank you again for the fabulous job that you did on the makeup!

Boudoir: Miss A

Sexy confidence. That is what this pretty lady had. She knew what she wanted for the shoot and was so excited to do this for her husband-to-be. Their wedding is just a few short months away and this is the perfect gift for him.

Miss A was the winner from the giveaway run by WeddingsInBC back in May, and I love it that she won. She is so beautiful and was such a joy to photograph. She told me that when she found out that she was the winner, she was so excited that she couldn’t keep it a surprise from her fiancé and just had to tell him. I think he was just as excited as she was.

Miss A, I wish you and your fiancé all the best as you prepare for your wedding! Thank you for allowing me to photograph you.

Creative Shoot: One Frame

Here is a preview of what’s coming to the blog soon…

Portraits: Marc

This is my little brother Marc. Well, not so little anymore. He’s the best brother a girl could ask for and I love him to bits! Apparently we look alike. We have the same birthmark on our faces and the same dark brown eyes and hair. When I was in grade 3 I had this horrible boy haircut, and someone actually thought once that I was my brother. To say that was a traumatic experience is an understatement. I don’t think I’ve ever fully recovered.

Anyways, the other evening Marc and I got to hang out for a bit and I snapped some photos of him. Shooting in the summer evening light is my favorite. It was so much fun! He was a natural in front of the camera…

Isn’t he such a stud??!

A Day For Jam Making

This has been something that I’ve been wanting to do for quite some time now. Make my own, homemade raspberry jam. Every year we are blessed with jars of jam from all of our amazing Gramma’s and other family members. But every year we only get maybe 2-3 jars of coveted raspberry in the bunch, sometimes only one. Now raspberry jam just happens to be both mine and Dave’s absolute favourite jam. And every year we fight over who has been eating more. I’m convinced he sneaks it in the middle of the night when I’m sound asleep. So trying to keep it fair sometimes takes a bit of a tole on our marriage ;)

So this year I decided to take matters into my own hands. I had to ensure that we would get more than the average 2 jars so that we wouldn’t bite each others’ heads off fighting for that last bit of raspberry goodness left in the jar. And the only way to do this was to add making my own jam to my 101 in 1001 list. I don’t know why the thought of making jam has been so terrifying to me before. Thousands of women have been making jam forever, and it’s worked just fine for them. I decided that it was high time that I put my Mennonite skills to use and make my Grammas proud.

So on this beautiful summer morning, my lovely Mother came over with jars and sugar. I had picked up a large flat of raspberries from a local farm, and we got to jamming!

50 Reasons to Smile

I decided to come up with a list of 50 things that make me smile. So often in life we focus on the negative things that happen to us in our regular day-to-day. And I’m guilty of this. I decided that I should physically write out 50 reasons to smile, big or small, so that when I’m having a down day, or I’m thinking about something negative, I can look back on this list, and it will bring a smile to my face and help me focus on the good things in life. Writing a list out and physically identifying the things that make you smile, really helps put life in perspective, and allows you to see the more important things in life. The things that are a blessing, that we sometimes take for granted. So here are the things that make me smile…
